Black actors, actresses and filmmakers have a good chance of being nominated for — and perhaps winning — more Oscars than any year in history.

This is due to several filmmakers being brave enough to tackle issues of race both historically and in the context of how we live now. In several of these works, we find not only artists pushing envelopes, but also film art at the top of its game.

It’s a development long overdue, and the fact that it’s a hot topic going into the fall movie season — when award-worthy films arrive almost every week — is good news.

In the Best Actor race, Chiwetel Ejiofor, who stars as a freed man in 1840 kidnapped by human traffickers in “12 Years a Slave, ” emerged after the Telluride and Toronto film festivals as an early lock for a nomination. Ejiofor will likely be joined by Forest Whitaker, who ages some 50-plus years as the title character in the summer hit “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.”

Whitaker, cheated out of nominations for “Bird” and “The Crying Game, ” was a winner in his first and only previous shot, for 2006’s “The Last King of Scotland.”

Less definitive this year, but certainly in the running, is Idris Elba, who plays South African leader Nelson Mandela in “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.” Hopefully, Michael B. Jordan will be remembered for his layered, heartbreaking turn in July’s 5-star “Fruitvale Station.”

Oprah Winfrey will likely get her second Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for “The Butler, ” while Lupita Nyong’o, who delivers an amazingly wrenching performance in “12 Years a Slave, ” is quickly becoming a favorite in that category.

Octavia Spencer, a Best Supporting Actress winner two years ago for “The Help, ” may snag a similar nomination for “Fruitvale Station, ” for her portrayal of Jordan’s concerned mom. Anothe r possible contender is Viola Davis for her turn as a distraught mother in “Prisoners.”

As for in the acting world....

I like that African American actors have made gains in the industry. But It is still a shame that African American Actresses are still getting the short end of the stick. But here is the promise to the future...Kerry Washington, Zoe Saldana and our Britis... Why do I name these four? These are only black actresses I today that I have a range comparable to say Gwyenth Paltrow or Hillary Hwank.
I have to say though that the British girls seem to have to the best acting range. Thandie has went from playing Sally Hemings in a A Jefferson in Paris, to Beloved in Beloved, to her roles in Crash and in Jawa Man where she plays a African Tribal leader

Well truth be told they don't do well overseas.

Attempts at marketing mostly black cast films fail to bring in any money overseas. So it is reality. And what they base overseas off of is Asia, Europe and Australia. Not a single Tyler Perry, John Singleton or Spike Lee film has been able to do well on the global market. Black films can do well domestically, but they just don't attract attention non-black markets due to often what is seen as a need to understand the nuances in African American culture to for foreign film goers to understand them.
Now when Black actors and actresses are cast in mainstream films as leads then all that washes away
