Oprah is not the only black female in the industry that struggles with weight issues. I can name a whole list of black female celebrities that have been scrutinized about their weight, Tyra Banks, Jennifer Hudson, Star Jones, Queen Latifah, Gabourey Sidibe (from Precious) to name a few. African American Television Actresses

October 4, 2013 ‐ By Madame Noire From Black Voices To see someone on television that looks like you is a powerful feeling. It’s a feeling one can take for granted if their image is the one that dominates the screen. Those on the opposite end of the spectrum, however, who never see themselves on TV, glorify and revere in that feeling, and in the fleeting moments where it comes to life. One of those moments for black women came last year with the debut of “Scandal, ” starring Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope. Washington’s role marked the first time a black woman has…

African American Best Actress nominees

Best Actress Some years, it’s a stretch to come up with five decent candidates for Best Actress; such are the seemingly permanent inequities of the movie business. So it’s a pleasure to report that, despite a deeply problematic set of films, this year’s field is actually stronger than the roster of Best Actor candidates — the women contending for nominations this year did more with less. (But why should they have to? That’s another story.) The field: Three actresses are in, and three more are vying for the final two spots. First, the sure bets: Viola Davis , Meryl Streep , and…

African American Actresses with natural hair

Arden takes one last look in her hall mirror as she smooths out the fly away hairs on her shoulder-length bob and gives her wig one final tug before she walks out the door. Many black women share a similar routine. These women are not headed to a nightclub, a video shoot, nor are most of them cancer patients dealing with the traumatic side effects of Chemotherapy. It’s Monday morning – Clara and her counterparts are headed to work in corporate America. Black women say they continue to struggle when it comes to having natural hairstyles accepted in the corporate workplace. Listen…

The twelfth Academy Awards ceremony was held on Thursday, February 29, 1940 at the Coconut Grove of the Ambassador Hotel. Though the winners were supposed to be kept a secret, attendees who had happened to buy a newspaper before the show knew who had won. For years, the Academy had given a winners list to newspapers early so that they could announce the winners in their late editions. Unfortunately, the Los Angeles Times announced the winners in their 8:45 p.m. edition. Ever since the twelfth Awards ceremony, the winners have been kept an absolute secret. Though there were many…

Upcoming African American Actresses

Wayans’s not-so-shocking response is a fitting comment on the dearth of opportunities offered African-American actresses in film, television, and the media generally. In a year that has seen black women highlighted and showcased as the “help’’ or as disgruntled ex-wives ready to fistfight the next woman in a heartbeat, many in film and television continue to pose the question: will more selective, diverse, and fully developed roles ever be a reality for women of color? “I didn’t think we’d still be having this same conversation so many years later, ’’ says Wayans, who gained…

African American Actresses with blue eyes

An undergraduate student from Georgia October 8, 2004 African Americans with blue eyes are not unheard of but they are pretty rare. There are lots of ways for this to happen. Three possible ways you might have ended up with blue eyes are: Caucasian relatives in your past A rare disease that makes a person an albino only in their eyes A new mutation Waardenburg syndrome (A common way to end up with two different colored eyes.) Let s get rid of one of the reasons pretty quickly. You probably don t have a form of albinism called ocular albinism (OA). Albinism causes a person to…
